"I'm going to stop playing when I'm 67 and work on what I really want to do, which is to be a minister, like Little Richard." -- Carlos Santana, in an interview with Rolling Stone.
you know, that kind of confirms for me the comparison o' reg netted to marilyn manson in some mag. (for the record, they said elton was the 1970s manson, not...you know. and now i'm scared to imagine manson's equivalent to "can you feel the love tonight".)
Elton's big hit at the time was "Mama Can't Buy You Love". Even at age 10 I knew that was about as satanic as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. But yeah, in church they played Elton's records backwards pointing out the obvious satanic incantations (such as "mwraaaaawrgh") and dissecting his album covers for clues as to Elton's satanism (the "Captain Fantastic" album cover in particular has a lot of mystic iconography...but then again they did the same thing to the Eagles' "Hotel California"...)
Unless Marilyn Manson is held in much higher regard by rock critics than he is by me, if I were Elton I'd be mortified. But then again Elton did do that duet with Eminem, and that Princess Diana song, and that duet with Guns and Roses, and those awful musicals (example: Lestat: The Musical!), so perhaps he's due for a little comeuppance.
as long as i've derailed this, should i add that i've been listening to the gentlemen afterdark EP? it reminds me of the paisley underground stuff from that era. if you told me they toured the west coast with the three o'clock and game theory, i wouldn't have been shocked. (note: this is a very good thing.) that said, i had to lsiten around the high-endy production. why do so many low-budget albums from the early '80s have that trebly production?
Either way, I'll take Satana any day of the week. Even if she doesn't have a secret chord progression that makes every one of her songs sound the goddamn same.
It makes as much sense as the other thing. I wonder if he's aware of every aspect of Little Richard's ministry. The whomp-bomp-a-lula is all well and good, but the whomp-bam-boom is not for the skittish.

Date: 2008-10-04 12:38 pm (UTC)I used to go to a church that told me Elton John was a satanist. The, um, the fundie mentality is a little mystifying to me, I must admit.
