Elton's big hit at the time was "Mama Can't Buy You Love". Even at age 10 I knew that was about as satanic as the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. But yeah, in church they played Elton's records backwards pointing out the obvious satanic incantations (such as "mwraaaaawrgh") and dissecting his album covers for clues as to Elton's satanism (the "Captain Fantastic" album cover in particular has a lot of mystic iconography...but then again they did the same thing to the Eagles' "Hotel California"...)

Unless Marilyn Manson is held in much higher regard by rock critics than he is by me, if I were Elton I'd be mortified. But then again Elton did do that duet with Eminem, and that Princess Diana song, and that duet with Guns and Roses, and those awful musicals (example: Lestat: The Musical!), so perhaps he's due for a little comeuppance.

as long as i've derailed this, should i add that i've been listening to the gentlemen afterdark EP? it reminds me of the paisley underground stuff from that era. if you told me they toured the west coast with the three o'clock and game theory, i wouldn't have been shocked. (note: this is a very good thing.) that said, i had to lsiten around the high-endy production. why do so many low-budget albums from the early '80s have that trebly production?
